Abandoned Marsh

Inspired by Brandon Bird’s impressionist Sears paintings, in 2017 I documented sixty Marsh supermarkets, warehouses, and other buildings abandoned by Sun Capital Partners during their ownership of the brand from 2006-2017. The images were generated in the Adobe Creative Suite based on reference photos and designed to represent the unique architecture and relative scale of each building in a minimalist fashion.

Marsh Supermarkets was a regional grocery store chain founded in Yorktown in 1931. By 2006, the company had grown to 117 grocery stores under several brands, 154 Village Pantry convenience stores, three florists, two catering services, and a restaurant.

Many in the area have relatives or know someone who worked for Marsh and its bankruptcy left several voids in the communities that Marsh served.
