Delaware County Schoolhouses

In 2015, I located and documented the 45 remaining one-room schoolhouses in Delaware County by using 1887 plat maps in conjunction with Google maps. The bulk of the project took two days of driving around the county, with several trips later to photograph some I’d missed.

Delaware County is fortunate to have so many one-room schoolhouses still extant. Most opened in the 1880s, and many were named after the families who donated land for their construction. The schoolhouses gradually closed over the next forty years as consolidation swept through the townships. Today many are used as private residences, many are abandoned, and several are used for agricultural purposes. Several were torn down to make way for the construction of I-69.

Photos in this project were minimally edited using Picasa for convenience. I intend to redo the project in the near future with better equipment.
